Power NI's EV tariffs: EV Nightshift and EV Anytime, explained
Power NI sells two tariffs for electric car owners. EV Nightshift has a cheap overnight rate and a dearer day rate; EV Anytime is one flat rate. Which is cheaper is not a matter of opinion: on the rates we read on 29 October 2026, Nightshift wins only if more than about a third of your home's electricity is used between 1am and 8am.

The short answer
- EV Nightshift: 17.79p a unit from 1am to 8am, 37.20p by day, 13.55p a day standing charge. Needs a day and night meter.
- EV Anytime: 30.53p a unit at any hour, same 13.55p standing charge, no special meter.
- The tipping point: Nightshift beats Anytime only if over about 34% of your household's units fall inside the night window. Below that, Anytime is cheaper.
All figures include 5% VAT and are Power NI's best tier (monthly Direct Debit with online billing), read 29 October 2026. Other tiers are below. We re-check monthly.
EV Nightshift: the rates on every payment tier
Power NI publishes a different rate for each payment method and discount band, and the gap between the best and worst is real. Figures include 5% VAT, with the excluding-VAT figure in brackets.

EV Anytime: the rates on every payment tier

Read 29 October 2026 from Power NI's unit-rates page and its electric vehicle tariff page. Night window: 1am to 8am in winter (GMT), 2am to 9am in summer (BST). Power NI's online-billing discount for monthly Direct Debit customers is 6%, up to £15 a quarter. The standing charge is the same on both tariffs within each tier.
Nightshift or Anytime: the maths
Nightshift's night rate is far lower than Anytime's flat rate, but its day rate is far higher. On the best tier, Nightshift costs 37.20p by day against Anytime's 30.53p, so every daytime unit costs you 6.67p more, while every night unit saves you 12.74p. The two break even when about 34.4% of your home's units are used at night. Above that, Nightshift is cheaper; below it, Anytime is. The standing charge is identical, so it does not change the answer.
The car alone does not settle it. An overnight charge helps, but what counts is your whole house. Check a recent bill or smart-meter readout for your night-time share before you switch, particularly if you heat with electricity or run appliances on timers.
| Putting 60 units into the car | Cost |
|---|---|
| EV Nightshift, inside the night window (17.79p) | £10.67 |
| Power NI Economy 7, inside the night window (17.82p) | £10.69 |
| EV Anytime, any time (30.53p) | £18.32 |
| EV Nightshift, charged by day (37.20p) | £22.32 |
Illustrative: 60 units, on the best tier, including VAT, ignoring charging losses. Standing charges are not included.
The last row is the trap. Nightshift only saves money if the car actually charges overnight: left to charge at 6pm, it is the most expensive way to run an EV on Power NI. A smart charger such as the Ohme or Zappi reads the window and schedules itself, so you never have to remember.
Is it worth moving to Power NI at all?
EV Nightshift is not a large saving over Power NI's ordinary Economy 7: on the same payment tier it is 0.03p a unit cheaper at night and 0.07p cheaper by day, with the same standing charge, which is about 2p on a 60-unit charge. If you are already on Economy 7 with Power NI, you are not leaving much on the table. The bigger question is whether Power NI is the right supplier. Share Energy's Share EV is cheaper overnight, and Click Energy's Day & Night undercuts Nightshift at night too, each with different day rates and night windows.

Power NI and EV charging: common questions
Does Power NI have an EV tariff?
Yes, two. EV Nightshift is a day and night tariff with a cheap overnight rate, and EV Anytime is a single flat rate for charging at any time. On Power NI's best payment tier (monthly Direct Debit with online billing), checked on 29 October 2026, EV Nightshift costs 17.79p a unit at night and 37.20p by day including VAT, and EV Anytime costs 30.53p a unit all day, with a 13.55p daily standing charge on both. Power NI was the first Northern Ireland supplier to sell EV-specific tariffs, but it is not the only one: Share Energy sells Share EV.
What time is Power NI's EV night rate?
The night rate runs from 1am to 8am in winter (GMT) and 2am to 9am in summer (BST), which is seven hours. That is the same window as Power NI's Economy 7. At 7kW a charger can deliver up to 49 units inside it. EV Anytime has no night window because it is one flat rate.
Is Power NI's EV Nightshift cheaper than Economy 7?
Only by a whisker. On the same payment tier (monthly Direct Debit with online billing, including VAT, checked 29 October 2026), EV Nightshift charges 17.79p at night and 37.20p by day, against 17.82p and 37.27p for Power NI's Economy 7, with the same 13.55p standing charge. That is 0.03p a unit at night, about 2p on a 60-unit charge. Economy 7 is a perfectly sound alternative if you are already on it; the tariff you are on matters far less than whether your car charges inside the night window.
Should I choose EV Nightshift or EV Anytime?
It comes down to how much of your home's total electricity you use at night. Because Nightshift's day rate (37.20p) is higher than EV Anytime's flat rate (30.53p), Nightshift only wins overall if more than about a third of all the units your home uses fall inside the 1am to 8am window (34.4% on the best tier; the standing charge is identical on both). A household that charges the car overnight and runs the dishwasher, washing machine and storage heating at night will usually clear that. A household that uses most of its electricity in the daytime, or cannot get a day and night meter, is better on EV Anytime.
Do I need a special meter, and is there a contract?
EV Nightshift needs a meter that records day and night usage separately, so your overnight units can be billed at the lower rate; EV Anytime does not. Power NI's EV tariff page says there are no contracts or exit fees on these tariffs, and that they are open to new and existing customers, who sign up through an online form followed by a call from an agent. If you need a day and night meter fitted, our guide to the process is linked below.
Can I get EV Nightshift on a keypad meter?
Not that we can see. On Power NI's unit-rates page on 29 October 2026, EV Nightshift is listed only under Bill Pay payment tiers, while EV Anytime also has a keypad tier (31.66p a unit, 14.05p a day including VAT). If you pay by keypad and want a night rate, ask Power NI directly before you plan around it.
Have Power NI's EV rates gone up?
Power NI raised household electricity prices by 6.2% on 1 July 2026, and the rates on this page already include that rise. The EV Nightshift and EV Anytime rates we read on 29 October 2026 are unchanged from the figures we recorded on 23 September. We re-check monthly and show the date on every table.
