Does solar charging actually make sense in Northern Ireland?

It can, with realistic expectations. NI gets less intense sun than the south of England, and a lot of charging happens overnight when there is no solar at all. But if you already have panels and your car is home during the day, even part-time, surplus solar that would otherwise be exported cheaply is well worth diverting into the car. It works best as a bonus on top of an off-peak tariff, not as your only charging plan.

Do I need solar panels already, or can I add them with the charger?

Solar charging only makes sense if you have, or are adding, solar PV. If you do not have panels, a smart charger on an off-peak tariff is the better running-cost play. If you do have panels, a solar-aware charger like the Zappi lets you use your own generation instead of exporting it.

Lower green levels allow grid contribution, and active boosts use full power, including grid power as needed. ECO keeps charging at a minimum rate with grid power when solar is insufficient. You can also switch to FAST or schedule overnight charging, but check your settings and tariff before relying on surplus-only charging.

Can I combine solar charging with a cheap night tariff?

Charging your EV from solar panels

If you have solar PV on the roof, you can pour the power you would otherwise export back to the grid straight into your car instead. With the right charger, those are close to free miles. Here is how it works in Northern Ireland, and when it is genuinely worth it.

The basic idea: use your surplus, do not export it

When your panels generate more than the house is using, the extra normally flows back to the grid, and you are paid a modest export rate for it. When solar charging is worth it

You already have solar panels, or are fitting them.
The car is home during daylight at least some days a week.
You want to self-consume generation rather than export it cheaply.
You see it as a daytime bonus on top of cheap overnight charging.

When to keep it simple instead

You have no solar and were not planning any.
The car is always out during the day and only ever charges at night.
You want the lowest cost with the least kit, in which case a smart charger on an off-peak tariff wins.

Realistic for NI: solar charging is a strong add-on if you already have panels and some daytime presence, but overnight off-peak charging usually does the heavy lifting. The best setups use both.

Pair it with an off-peak tariff
