What a granny charger actually is

A granny charger is the portable cable that either comes with the car or is bought separately: a normal 3-pin plug on one end, the car's connector on the other, and a small control box in the middle. That box deliberately limits the draw to around 2.3kW (about 10 amps), because that is roughly what an ordinary domestic socket can safely sustain hour after hour. The nickname comes from the idea of topping up at granny's house on a visit. It is genuinely handy, but that 2.3kW ceiling is why it charges at about a third the speed of a fitted 7kW unit, and it is why the safety rules further down matter.

Where it's fine

  • Backup:An occasional top-up when you can't reach a proper charger.
  • Low mileage:If you drive very little and an overnight trickle is enough.
  • Away from home:Visiting family, where a slow overnight charge covers you.
  • The battery:Slow charging is gentle on the car; that's not the worry.

How long a 3-pin charge actually takes

At about 2.3kW a granny charger adds roughly 8 to 10 miles of range an hour. The honest maths is simple: take the kWh you need, divide by 2.3, and add about 10% for AC charging losses. It charges perfectly well, it is just slow, and that is the whole trade-off.

Straight into the wall

Plug directly into a single wall socket. Never an extension lead, cable reel or multi-way block, this is a leading cause of home charging fires.

A sound socket and circuit

Use a modern socket on a healthy circuit, ideally checked by a qualified electrician. Old or loose sockets aren't built for hours at full load.

Check the temperature

Feel the plug and socket during the first few charges. Any warmth, buzzing or discolouration means stop and get it inspected.

Can you charge an electric car from a 3-pin plug?

Why can't I use an extension lead?

Is a granny charger bad for my car battery?

No, slow AC charging is actually gentle on the battery. The concern with a 3-pin plug is the socket and wiring in your home, not the car. The bigger downsides are simply speed and convenience, which is why most drivers move to a fitted 7kW unit once they're charging regularly.

Should I get a proper wall charger instead?
