EV charger with installation: what the fitted price includes
Most people don't want a charger and a separate electrician; they want one fitted price for the whole thing. In Northern Ireland that "with installation" figure is typically £800 to £1,500. Here's exactly what that covers, how the hardware and labour split, and why a bundle usually beats buying the unit on its own.

What a "with installation" price includes
A proper fitted price is more than a charger and someone to screw it to the wall. In NI it should cover all six of these. If a quote leaves any out, especially the NIE Networks step or the certificate, it isn't a complete price.
- 01 The charger unit
- A 7kW smart charger, supplied by the installer. Buying it as part of the package usually keeps the manufacturer warranty simple, because one company supplied and fitted it.
- 02 The electrical work
- A dedicated circuit from your consumer unit to the charger: the cable run, clips and containment, and the protective devices (the right RCD/RCBO) added to your fuse board.
- 03 Labour and the survey
- The installer's time on the day, plus the survey beforehand (often done remotely from photos) that confirms your board has capacity and the cable route is sensible.
- 04 NIE Networks notification
- The Northern Ireland step GB doesn't have. Every new home charger must be notified to NIE Networks by law, and a fitted package handles it as standard.
- 05 Testing and certification
- The install is tested, an electrical installation certificate (NICEIC) is issued, and any manufacturer warranty is registered. This is the paperwork you'll need for insurance and selling the house.
- 06 The OZEV grant, applied for you
- If you qualify (renters, flat owners, on-street, landlords, businesses), an OZEV-authorised installer deducts the 75% / £500 grant from the bundled price. You pay the reduced total.
Where the money goes: hardware vs labour
A fitted price is really two things added together. Seeing the split helps you judge whether a quote is fair.

Why a bundle usually beats buying the unit separately
It's tempting to buy the charger online and find someone to fit it. In practice, a "with installation" package tends to work out better on both price and cover.
- One warranty, one company. When the same installer supplies and fits the unit, a fault is their problem to sort. Split the two and a hardware fault and a wiring fault can become an argument about whose fault it is.
- No double markup. Installers buy chargers at trade prices. A bundle passes some of that on; buying retail then paying a separate fit fee can cost more in total.
- Grant-ready. The OZEV grant can only be claimed by an OZEV-authorised installer on the whole job. A fitted package is set up to deduct it; a supplied-unit job can complicate that.
- Cleaner survey. The installer picks a charger that suits your board and supply, rather than you guessing and hoping the one you bought fits the plan.
When buying separately can make sense
