EVs are cheaper to run than petrol cars for most drivers, but not on every line, and the road-tax rules changed in 2025. Here is the even-handed total for Northern Ireland: where you save, where you don't, and how it adds up once charging, road tax, servicing, tyres and insurance are all on the table.

On these numbers a home-charged EV costs about £632 a year to fuel and tax, against about £1,480 for the petrol car: a saving of roughly £848 a year, almost all of it on fuelling. Note the road-tax line is now the same £200 either way, and an EV run only on public rapids (£1,552) can cost more than the petrol car. Where the money really goes
The headline saving of an EV is fuelling, and it is a big one if you charge at home. But running cost is the sum of several lines, and being honest about the ones that go the other way (tyres, insurance, and the road tax EVs now pay) is the only way to judge it fairly. The electricity and petrol figures here are the verified NI rates from our cost-to-charge guide; the road-tax figures are the current gov.uk rates. Everything else is guidance, because it varies too much by car to put a single number on.

Road tax (VED): what changed in 2025
For years, electric cars paid nothing in Vehicle Excise Duty. That ended on 1 April 2025. A new zero-emission car now pays a first-year rate of £10, then the standard rate of £200 a year from the second year, exactly the same standard rate as an equivalent petrol or diesel car (2026-27 figures). The one EV-specific wrinkle is the expensive-car supplement: an extra £440 a year for five years (years two to six) on cars above a list-price threshold. For electric cars that threshold is £50,000, higher than the £40,000 that applies to petrol and diesel, so a mid-priced EV usually escapes it while a pricier one does not. EVs registered before 1 April 2025 stay outside the supplement. Rates are uprated most years, so check the current figure for your car before you buy. Servicing and maintenance
An EV has far fewer moving parts than a combustion car: no engine oil, oil filter, spark plugs, timing belt, clutch or exhaust to service or replace. Regenerative braking, where the motor slows the car and recovers energy, also means the brake pads and discs tend to wear more slowly. In practice that points to simpler, less frequent routine servicing. We will not put a percentage on it, because it varies by make, model and how the manufacturer structures its service plan, but the direction of travel clearly favours the EV. On the big-ticket worry, the battery, modern EV packs are typically covered by a long manufacturer warranty (commonly around eight years) and real-world degradation on recent cars has been slower than early fears suggested.
Tyres
This is the honest counterweight. EVs are heavier than the equivalent petrol car, mostly because of the battery, and they deliver torque instantly. Both put more load through the tyres, so they can wear faster, and some EVs run tyres built for the extra weight that cost more to replace. It is not a dealbreaker, but budget for tyres a little sooner than you would on a petrol car and factor it into any running-cost sum.
Insurance
EV insurance can run a little higher than for an equivalent petrol car. The reasons are practical rather than permanent: repair networks, trained technicians and parts supply for EVs are still maturing, and a damaged battery pack is expensive, so insurers price in the uncertainty. The gap varies enormously by model, driver and insurer, so we will not invent a figure. The sensible move is to get an actual quote for the specific car before you commit, and to shop around, because EV premiums vary more between insurers than petrol ones do.
Depreciation
Depreciation is the biggest cost of running almost any car, and it is the hardest to pin down for EVs honestly. It swings a lot by model: some hold value well, others fell sharply as list prices were cut and the used market found its level. The picture is steadying as more used EVs trade and buyers get comfortable checking battery health, but there is no single number that is true across the category. Treat depreciation as a per-car question, and look at what the specific model you are considering is doing on the used market rather than assuming EVs as a group are better or worse than petrol.

How much does it cost to run an electric car a year?
On our worked example of 8,000 miles a year, a home-charged EV on a Power NI Economy 7 night rate costs about £632 a year in electricity and road tax (£432 to charge plus the £200 standard VED rate), against about £1,480 for a 40mpg petrol car covering the same miles. That is a saving of roughly £848 a year, almost all of it on fuelling. Servicing, tyres and insurance sit on top of that and vary by car. Redo the sum with your own mileage and tariff.
Are electric cars cheaper to run than petrol cars?
For most drivers who can charge at home, yes, mainly on fuelling and servicing. Home charging on an EV night tariff is far cheaper per mile than petrol, and EVs need less routine maintenance. The savings shrink, or can disappear, if you rely on expensive public rapid charging or cannot charge at home. Purchase price, insurance, tyres and VED all matter too, so weigh the whole picture rather than fuelling alone.

What are the hidden running costs of an EV?
The ones people forget are tyres, insurance and VED. EVs are heavier and torquey, so tyres can wear faster; insurance can be higher while repair networks mature; and VED now applies. None of these usually outweighs the fuel and servicing savings for someone who charges at home, but they are real and worth budgeting for honestly.
How much does home charging save versus petrol?

Is an EV worth it if I can't charge at home?
It is a closer call. Without home charging you lean on public rapid chargers, which cost far more per mile: on our example an EV run only on rapids works out around £1,552 a year, more than the petrol car. You still get cheaper servicing and a better drive, but the economics are much stronger for anyone who can fit a home charger and pair it with an EV tariff.
