Who qualifies
This scheme is specifically for homes without private parking. You qualify if all of the following are true:
- Your home has no private off-street parking, so you park on the street.
- You own, lease or have ordered an OZEV-eligible electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle.
- You can install a non-temporary cross-pavement charging solution (a cable channel or gully) so a cable never trails across the footpath.
- Your local council or highways authority grants permission for the cross-pavement device.
- Any required planning approval is in place before the work starts.
The permissions to sort first
The on-street grant has more moving parts than the others because the cable crosses public footpath. Get these in order before any work starts.
Cross-pavement solution
A trailing cable across a public footpath is a trip hazard and isn't allowed. You need a fixed channel or gully that lets the cable pass safely below the surface. This is the core requirement of the on-street grant.
Council / highways permission
Because the device crosses public footpath, your local council or the highways authority has to approve it. The grant can't be claimed until that permission is granted.
Planning approval
Some cross-pavement installations need planning approval as well. Sort this before any work begins, as the grant cannot be backdated onto an install that's already done.
A registered installer
As with every OZEV scheme, an authorised installer makes the claim and notifies NIE Networks. They can also advise on which cross-pavement product your council will accept.
Important: the on-street grant cannot be backdated. If the charger is already installed, you've lost the chance to claim. Line up the permissions and the registered installer's claim before the work goes ahead.

Can I get an EV charger grant if I park on the street?
Yes. If you have no private off-street parking, the On-Street Chargepoint Grant pays 75% off your charger and installation, up to £500. The catch is that you need a non-temporary cross-pavement solution and council permission, because the cable has to cross the public footpath safely.
What is a cross-pavement solution?
It's a fixed channel or gully built into the pavement so your charging cable passes below the surface instead of trailing across it. A loose cable over a public footpath is a trip hazard and isn't permitted, which is why the grant requires a permanent solution.

Can the grant be applied after my charger is fitted?
No. The on-street grant cannot be backdated. The permissions and the OZEV-authorised installer's claim all have to be in order before the charger goes in, so plan the sequence before you commit.
